More Fast Food : More Excess Weight
01.26.07 (9:41 pm)   [edit]
A new study provides the best evidence to date that eating fast food makes you fat. Among nearly 3,400 young adults participating in a long-term study, every additional fast food meal they consumed each week correlated with a substantial increase in body mass index (BMI), Dr Barry M. Popkin of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and colleagues found.
"It's a large effect," Popkin told Reuters Health in an interview. "That's enough of an effect to take you from being non-diabetic to diabetic."
Food eaten away from home now accounts for up to 42 per cent of Americans' calorie intake, Popkin and his team note in their report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. While the increase in restaurant and fast food consumption has occurred at the same time as the rise in obesity, they add, it's not clear if it's a contributing factor.
The more fast food the subjects ate, the higher was their BMI, Popkin and colleagues found. However, the researchers found no association between meals eaten at traditional restaurants and increases in BMI; in fact, some analyses linked eating more often in restaurants to a slightly lower BMI.
The study confirms, Popkin said, that people who eat more fast food pack on more pounds. "People have been trying to say that, but they didn't have the kind of evidence that we have now."

I can see how it can make you fat. A sandwhich alone usually has at least 500-1000 calories. My second job was at a fast food place and i would always read the nutrition guide they put on trays. WOW the amount of calories and fat and everything else. I look forward to giving up the fast food, maybe that might help take off pounds.

it becomes difficult to control for those who work at fast foods. Everytime you end up having a cheesy meal. its easy to take those 500 - 1000 calories but how difficult it is to reduce them.
Keep the job in hand till you get another coz you already quit one. How are your feet and i hope you are enjoying the break ???

Oh the one i quit was at a fast food place, so i can give up the fast food meals.
I still have my regular job, which is at a pharmacy. My feet still hurt a little but they are getting better. I am really enjoying the break. :)

I'd like to know how much money they spent proving something all of us "pleasantly plump" ladies have known for years. And I wonder who got to pocket that cash!

On task, but sort of not... I haven't eaten fast food in over a year. My son's girlfriend offered me a double cheeseburger from Ronnie-d's ;) and I ate it as I was very hungry.

Without going into lurid detail, my body rebelled violently against this unknown infiltration. I was a very sick puppy for 1.5 hours, and now, thankfully, I am back to normal.

So now I am wondering - what on earth is in that stuff for my body to react so violently, or was this just a per chance case of food poisoning? All I remember is the grease...

did you soak your feet in luke warm water ? (for half an hour or plus, if water gets cold get some more warm water) you can also add a spoonful of salt in it, it does help.

well the research is on, first they invent and make money, then they reject the previous invention and make a new one to make money :) Any big 'fast food' may pay a lot to stop such klind of research :)

one thing is for sure, i have never found any healthy stuff in it. I dont realy like to take this junk food at all and i dont even recommend it to my kids who are now in the process of growing fondness of such food. I try to lead them to a Chinese restaurant instead :)

I haven't tried the salt thing yet but i will try it. A friend of mine let me borrow her foot spa. I call it a hot tub for feet.lol It makes the water bubble and keeps it kind of warm. So i've been alternating between that and soaking my feet in the bath tub. My feet feel so much better right now but i've also had 3 days off in a row.

yeah SP, most of us have a 'sitting' job, and we dont care about walking or 'going for a walk' much. That is important.
