Tokyo Drift
01.24.07 (10:07 pm)   [edit]
This third sequel in the Fast and the Furious series boasts of no star studded cast, with Lucas Black playing Sean, a troublesome young guy with a heavy Texan accent. Nathalie Kelley plays the leading lady, while other unfamiliar faces render supporting performances.
The story involves Sean Boswell who has a Knack for racing the hell out of jacked-up cars. He is sent to Japan after his mom runs out of ideas about how to keep him out of trouble.
After about 24 hours in Japan, Sean uncovers an underground scene in which boys race their cars while braking around turns, thus 'drifting' along. Although the entire plot is pretty lame, this concept of 'drifting' gives an interesting twist to the movie since the previous sequels were based on drag races.
Although the lead man, Sean, is missing Van Deesel's natural charm. Paul Walker's abs and Tyrese's tanktop, Lucas still manages to create a reasonable impact with his good looks and southern accent. The film looks more like a silver screen version of the famous playstation game Mignight Club, since most of the scenes have been shot at night with the trademark Tokyo city night life at its best.
Han (Sung Kang) plays a Japanese guy who becomes good friends with Sean and is one classy character, delivering an equally strong performance. The guest appearance (I don't want to spoil the surprise) in the end does create a stir, but overall, the film is mediocre.
