Manner of Saddam's Execution Wrong: Blair
01.09.07 (9:29 pm)   [edit]

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Tuesday that the way Saddam Hussein was executed was completely wrong', in his first reaction to the hanging of the former Iraqi leader.
"The manner of the execution of Saddam Hussein was completely wrong, but that should not blind us to the crimes he committed against his people," he said at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Mr Blair had declined until now to answer questions about Saddam's hanging.
Widespread criticism was fuelled by a grainy mobile phone video of the execution, which showed Saddam being taunted by officials seconds before the noose was put around his head.
"The manner of the execution is unacceptable and it's wrong. But we should ... not ... lurch into a position of forgetting the victims of Saddam," said Mr Blair.

I disagree with Saddam being hanged despite his numerous crimes. It was barbaric.

I have shielded myself from viewing any of the videos available online of the execution because I wouldn't be able to get the images out of my head.

I worry about the consequences of this action in the near future and in generations to come. Who knows what this act will perpetuate in people in that country?

I'm glad Saddam is gone. The soldiers taunting him was definatly not necessary, but in regards to the method of execution, Saddam himself put people to death in much more barbaric ways than hanging.

Truly speaking, even i also refrained from viewing the video. Its truly barbaric. Just the video has caused so many controversies around the globe, the consequences of execution are indeed dire. There are millions who followed him and millions who did not.

I think it does not matter what is done in Iraq, it will always be wrong. Saddam held his country together with ruthless oppression, and you can see why because there are so many different factions pulling in different directions, it means the country will just tear itself apart. He's gone, it was never going to be nice, so lets just get with it.

True Tiger. Saddam knew his people well and was truly holding then together. The split is on the cards now. Thats what The Big 'B's will think of next. If you have so many problems at hand in home why poke nose in neighbour's home ? and worst that you start killing them.

why Bush is doing all this, is a long story. I will do a post on it sometime :)

It amazes me that anyone would think Saddam Hussein deserves anything but a barbaric death. Folks this man didn't just kill people or order people to be killed, he tortured them, he tortured children, he orchestrated chemical baths. I cannot believe we live in a society that thinks this monster deserved any more than what he got. And furthermore, what about Adolph Hitler? Would there be such a public outcry of injustice if it were he in the gallows? Don't mean to step on any toes here guys, but geez, this man relinquished his civil rights years ago when his killing spree began--IMHO.

Yes it was wrong

For me the killing of saddam was wrong,

They could have given him life imprisonment, i don't support killling any human(expections in certain cases).

May be he was not such a good human, but they could have set an example and atleast in this way reduced the hatred towards them.

I am against it too but for a different reasons.
1. its like playing with the emotions of those (millions) who followed him.
2. it has sparked more riots in already war torned Iraq.
3. It can be a major cause/reason for more terrorism.

I dont have much sympathies with Saddam, but with those who are already suffering and will suffer more after this episode.

Very good points whisper, I would counter only by saying--the Iraqi's and all of the insurgent type groups have been killing one another for hundreds and hundreds of years. Long before Saddam and long before the US presence. This is a culture very different from what we know, I honestly don't think there's much that can be done to stop it.
