Cruising
12.15.06 (9:24 pm)   [edit]
Cruising is a wonderful experience - a combination of style and luxury, allowing you to see the world from a different perspective. There are a wide variety of cruises to choose from, sailing all year round, to different destinations, from the Far East to Europe to the Caribbean and North America.
Here is your guide to planning your cruise vacation.
  1. Plan early.  Cruise vessels are huge, but like all hotels, rooms are limited and sold on a first come, first serve basis. Planning early will help you get the sailing dates of your choice and give you sufficient time for visa formalities and maybe earn you a discount.
  2. Selecting your cruise.   From a minimum three days/two nights up to a 60 - 70 day world cruise, you have a world of options before you. Ask your travel agent for brochures and DVDs as they contain itineraries and will help you visualise what to expect.
  3. Visas.   Depending on your destination, a visa can be sanctioned from anywhere between six working days to six months. You may require double or multiple entry visas, depending on how you plan your journey.
  4. Avoid cancellation charges.  Cruise operators have very strict cancellation policies and the charges are heavy. When booking, plan carefully or you may end up paying 100% cancellation charges. Also before sailing, ensure that you have all relevant travel documents with you, as insufficient documentation may lead to your boarding being denied, and no refund will be made.
  5. All included.   A reason cruises are so popular is because they are all inclusive packages; meals, drinks, entertainment and services are all included. As cruise operators have different policies, ask your travel agent for details on what's included and what's not.
  6. Extras.  Every day you will receive an onboard schedule to help you plan what to do, and when you are at a port of call, you will have the option of several excursions to enhance your experience.

My fantasy cruise is a 16-day excursion, round-trip from Tahiti, visiting the islands of the Marquesas.

This cruise includes stops in Nuku Hiva, site of the recent Survivor television show; Hiva Oa, resting place of Paul Gauguin; Ua Pou, with it’s towering volcanic spires. This French Polynesia cruise also includes the islands of Fatu Hiva, Ua Huka, and Tahuata, all known for their fine art. Finally, I will get a chance to discover the enchanting coral atolls of Takapoto and Fakarava (Tuamotu).

This particular cruise will be on a unique ship, the Aranui freighter. It will take me far from the routes of typical Tahiti cruise tours.

So, all I need to do now is come up with about $15,000, which would include airfare and hotel stays while in Tahiti. Or, I can do it with cheap accomodations for about half the price, but my wife and I would have to endure bunkbeds!

I think a more realistic hope for me is a cruise to the Bahamas, leaving from Jacksonville Florida. A five or seven day cruise can be found at a very reasonable price, especially off-season.

The cost of the cruise is about $5,000 apiece. It's a combo freighter and cruise ship, delivering to the remote islands. Sounds very intriguing to me. A few years ago I read an interesting book entitled The Sex Lives Of Cannibals, about a couple who spent two years on the remote Pacific island of Kiribati. Who goes to Kiribati? So, such an excursion continues to sound intriguing. And, one of these days, I'm likely to throw all caution aside and just do something like this. Why not? Like you say, "...life is not a rehearsal."

I love cruising! IT's nice that the meals are there, and you can see a few places in a short amount of time :)

that sounds interesting. i'd love to do that. Sometimes i do think to just put everything aside and move. But you know there are many considerations. I'd love to take my wife along but she is not the type. She is kinda luxury lover. So doing adventures at my own and that too alone (without any like-minded company )seems quite boring. Truly, life must be enjoyed as its not a rehearsal and i'm convincing my wife steadily to forget about the luxury and see the world and its inhabitants, explore, experiment. The world is too big and we have seen so little. I think even the world is not enough.

sea sickness can be deadly if you are alone on a cruise. Search for a partner is a good idea :)

The Star Ferry brings back many memories. I vaguely recall dropping my purse in the water when I was a little girl. *L* Did you hear? They're going to shrink the harbour to make way for more development :-(
