Lateral Thinking
12.14.06 (1:27 am)   [edit]
  • Ideas are the currency of success. They separate you from your competition.
  • Lateral thinking is a technique and a willingness to look at things in a different way; i.e it is both a technique and an attitude. According to its creator, Dr Edward de Bono, one should be free of constraints, tradition and history in order to be creative and this is achieved by using certain deliberate techniques.
  • Today's environment demands innovation and contrary to common belief, creativity is not a gift but a skill that can be learnt and perfected.
  • Here are a few reasons why Lateral Thinking is important.
    • It presents a deliberate, methodical process resulting in innovative thinking.
    • Lateral thinking applies to human problem solving and is specifically concerned with changing preconceived notions.
    • It constructively challenges existing beliefs to bring out new ideas using unconventional thinking techniques.
    • It turns problems into opportunities and helps us to think "outside the box" and overcome hurdles with ease.
    • Many problems require a different perspective to solve and trying harder in the same direction may not be as constructive as changing direction.
  • Lateral thinking is by no means a substitute for the traditional vertical type of thinking (logical or analytical) in which you move forward through a series of sequential steps. It complements both analytical and critical thought. One of the significant factors is that you let go of the rigid control of thinking and explore unconventional ways of looking at things.

lateral thinking is easier rather complex traditional ways, u don't have to look outside for solutin it is alwys inside ur mind somewhere. it just need tht light to reach to it.

true SP . you need to look within for the answers and solutions and you find them if you have the sight.

I think it is like seeking solutions to problems by way of analogy. If you can say, "this chemistry problem is a lot like something I experienced in a game of chess so I'll see if a similar tact will work here", then (I think) that would be using lateral thinking.

It is like when Alexander cut the Gordian knot, he was using lateral thinking. he didn't sit there and accept being limited by the terms set forth by the knot (ie: untie me), he used the most broad definition of the task (break the knot) and found a solution (hitting it with his sword).
