India Losing 7,000 Unborn Girls Daily
12.13.06 (1:13 am)   [edit]
India is losing almost 7,000 girls daily because of the traditional preference for sons which cause many people to abort female foetuses, the UNICEF says.
"India is one of the few countries worldwide with an adverse child sex ratio in favour of boys," the United Nations children's agency said in its annual "State of the World's Children 2007" report.
"Nationwide, 7,000 fewer girls than expected are born each day, largely due to sex determination, " the report said.
A study by British medical journal "The Lancet" said this year that India may have lost 10 million unborn girls in the pastt 20 years, but Indian experts say the figure is not more than five million.
Under Indian law, tests to find out the gender of an unborn boby are illegal if not done for medical reasons, but the parctice continues in what activists say is a flourishing multi-million-dollar business.
Northern Punjab state has one of the worst sex ratios in the country, with 798 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of six.
The national average is 927 - still well below the worldwide average of 1,050 female babies.
UNICEF said there were fewer than 800 girls per 1000 boys in 14 districts of Punjab and neighbouring Haryana, both of which are prosperous state.
Girls in India are often considered a liability, as parents have to put away large sums of money for dowries at the time of their marriage. Many grooms demand dowry well beyond the means of the families of their spouse.

That's sad. I've heard about this in China and now India too? :( Can't believe anyone could kill another (innocent) lives, who are supposed to be their own kids, just because of that reason. [In China, they want sons because they're afraid that their surname's would disappear one day, if they had only daughters- and when they get married, they have to have their hub's surname] (My apology, if I said it wrong)

sad sad sad sad! Thanks to my family for giving me a chance to be on this world (my grandma was half Chinese)

you will be horrified to know that same is the case with Pakistan. Unicef says, some 500,000 children die annually, premature and before reaching the age of 5, mostly from preventable causes, in Pakistan. Many among those never are not allowed to take birth. How cruel we are ? :(

The thing ur talking abt is called dowry in india which is crime in law, if caught the family of groome will be prosecuted, but the problem is the families of bride just don't use it,

and secondly it is the same old indian mentality of girl being an burden my foot, take my ass,

How can thy forget Indira Gandhi(One of the PM of India), Kalpana Chawla(Astronaut), and now Sunita who is in space,

The problem is education, literacy, and the state which has very good literacy rate has similarly healthy sex ratio rate Kerala with 99 education rate, 973/100 girls to boys ratio,

Yaar thy just don't understand guys like me are lonely finding and thy r making it much more tough for us... these ppl

hahahaha

but seriously hopefully india come in light every indian who knows whts real freedom will this picture of india which say Freedom to india means a razor in hand of monkey. someday, i hope mann and before i die

this has lot to do with literacy i suppose. We need to educate people first before we move some drive to curb all such things.
