| Vital Vitamins |
| 01.31.07 (9:56 pm) [edit] |
|
Since British sailors discovered that lemons and limes could protect them from scurvy, people have been fascinated by the ability of certain foods to keep the body healthy. Leading the disease fighting army are the 13 vitamins required by our body: A, C, D, E, K, and the B-complex series-thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, B12, biotin and falocin. "Each is responsible for certain functions within the cells, so if the body lacks a vitamin or is not processing it properly, illness can result," explains Natalie Gehlen, a registered dietitian Advocate's Trinity Hospital in Chicago. So how do you ensure that your diet packs the vitamins you need? "A diet containing at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables can provide you with many of these vitamins," says Gehlen. However, there's mounting evidence that there's some benefit in taking a vitamin supplement that provides high doses of Falocin and the three antioxidant vitamins C, E and beta carotene. The antioxidants seem to protect the body against cancer, heart disease and cataracts. And Falocin (also known as Folic acid or Folate) helps prevent birth defects. Because of their benefits, many doctors recommend taking a supplement to ensure you get enough of these vitamins. When it comes to other vitamins, though, it's best to get your fill from food, which increases vitamin absorption and provides other nutrients. "But", says Gehlen, "taking a supplement won't transform a bad diet into a good one. There's no substitute for healthy eating". By : Aamir Raz Soomro Source : Dawn

| Stolen GPS Lead Police to Thieves |
| 01.31.07 (9:30 pm) [edit] |
|
Thieves who stole global positioning systems (GPS) from a warehouse in New York state were apprehended after authorities activated the tracking devices to locate them. Fourteen GPS were stolen last week from a warehouse in Babylon, New York. The town had planned to use them to track its municipal fleet of vehicles. Police and municipal staff said they remotely activated the devices and were led to the home of one of the culprits who was found fidling with one of them. "The GPS device is quite beneficial when we are looking for something. Within 48 hours we had the individuals under arrest for this (crime), said Inspector Robert Casagne of the Suffolk County detachment. The thieves believed they had snagged cell phones and planned to sell them.

| Andrea Update by John Kelso |
| 01.30.07 (9:53 pm) [edit] |
|
Hi all,
I was told the therapists at Andrea's rehab facility had a meeting today to discuss how long she would be staying there as an in-patient and what her prognosis might be. I was hoping this meeting wold clear up some of the uncertainty surrounding these issues, but such is not completely the case... I was told she would be leaving the rehab on 2/12 unless insurance declined to pay for a stay that long. Andrea is doing very well physically, but is still poor at problem solving, and is easily confused. She still has a lot of trouble expressing herself. Alas, the insurance company only seems to care about the physical aspects, and not the cognitive, so they might not let her stay until the 12th. This seems very odd to me, as I'd consider cognitive ability more important than physical ability, but that's how it is. If it comes to it, I might need to start making some calls to see if I can reason with the insurance company. I'm supposed to go to the rehab facility this Friday at 1:00 to meet with a doctor who will discuss her case with me further. He will be evaluating Andrea that morning. They were at this point unable to give me any predictions of long-term outcomes. I will let you know what I learn. At this point I'm told Andrea will need 24-hour supervision when released. I'm not sure how to pull this off. The VT Adult Day Services was mentioned as an option to investigate. I have some calls in already. Some of you might know its Director- Alison Galway. So, the future is still unclear. I'll let you know what I learn as soon as I learn it.
-John

| Nosterdames |
| 01.29.07 (9:37 pm) [edit] |
|
Nostradamus (December 14, 1503 – July 2, 1566) Nosterdames (Nostradamus) (December 14, 1503 – July 2, 1566), Latinised name of Michel de Nostredame, was one of the world's most famous publishers of prophecies. He is best known for his book Les Propheties, the first edition of which appeared in 1555. Since the publication of this book, which has rarely been out of print since his death and has always been hugely popular throughout the world, Nostradamus has attracted an almost cult following. His many enthusiasts, to say nothing of the popular press, credit him with predicting numerous major world events. In contrast, most of the academic sources maintain that the associations made between world events and Nostradamus' quatrains are largely the result of misinterpretations or mistranslations (sometimes deliberate) or else are so tenuous as to render them useless as evidence of any genuine predictive power. Moreover, none of the sources offers any evidence that anyone has ever interpreted any of Nostradamus' quatrains specifically enough to allow a clear identification of any event in advance. Nevertheless, interest in the work of this prominent figure of the French Renaissance is still considerable, especially in the media and in popular culture, and the prophecies have in some cases been assimilated to the results of applying the alleged Bible Code, as well as to other purported prophetic works.

| Humour at Work |
| 01.29.07 (7:57 am) [edit] |
We spend considerable time working at a hectic pace in our corporate life, therefore it goes without saying that we need a little break to relax, catch our breath and even have a laugh or two. In fact, laughing heartily when there is nothing particularly amusing is good for health. Here is how you can find more humour at work. - Smile. The most inexpensive way to improve your looks and helps to create a positive, friendly and approachable image of yourself.
- Perspective. Lighten up! See the lighter side of things, especially in tense situations which may escalate to full blown verbal exchanges.
- Read. Logon to any of the zillions of websites for funny jokes, quotes, cartoons, etc. Alternatively keep similar reading material handy such as a book, newspaper, magazines etc.
- Reach Out. Call a friend to share s silly joke or situation both of you enjoyed. Make sure that she/he is not in the middle of a serious business meeting.
- Imagine. Relive a funny moment or simply fall back on your good old creative imagination to make a few funny situations of your own.
- Practical Jokes. Your company's culture permitting, pulling a prank can bring life to an otherwise sober moods - but only if you are confident of getting another job relatively quickly.
- Spread Sunshine. If you are blessed with a genuine sense of humour (no assumptions please), spread smiles by cracking jokes, mimicking or throwing catchy one liners.
- Remember, life is short and we mustn't waste it by missing out on the good times. As they say, "Don't sweat the small stuff and it is ALL small stuff".

| Dinner Delights - Homemade Tangy Pickle |
| 01.28.07 (1:46 am) [edit] |
Winter is the time for delectable and easy to make pickles. Spend a couple of hours this weekend making a pickle the entire family will enjoy. You will relish the wonderful zesty flavour it has to offer.

- Scrape the skin of the ginger and slice.

| More Fast Food : More Excess Weight |
| 01.26.07 (9:41 pm) [edit] |
|
A new study provides the best evidence to date that eating fast food makes you fat. Among nearly 3,400 young adults participating in a long-term study, every additional fast food meal they consumed each week correlated with a substantial increase in body mass index (BMI), Dr Barry M. Popkin of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and colleagues found. "It's a large effect," Popkin told Reuters Health in an interview. "That's enough of an effect to take you from being non-diabetic to diabetic." Food eaten away from home now accounts for up to 42 per cent of Americans' calorie intake, Popkin and his team note in their report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. While the increase in restaurant and fast food consumption has occurred at the same time as the rise in obesity, they add, it's not clear if it's a contributing factor. The more fast food the subjects ate, the higher was their BMI, Popkin and colleagues found. However, the researchers found no association between meals eaten at traditional restaurants and increases in BMI; in fact, some analyses linked eating more often in restaurants to a slightly lower BMI. The study confirms, Popkin said, that people who eat more fast food pack on more pounds. "People have been trying to say that, but they didn't have the kind of evidence that we have now."

| Mozart's 250th Birthday |
| 01.26.07 (9:25 pm) [edit] |
|
Painting by Barbara Krafft 1819 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Baptized Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart) (January 27, 1756 – December 5, 1791) Austria Mozart has a new record - and this one isn't pressed into vinyl
Organisers of last year's series of festivals, exhibitions, concerts and conferences to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth said the jubilee drew 1.2 million tourists to Austria - a record for a single festival. Michael Haeupl, the mayor of Vienna - which hosted many events along with the composer's birthplace of Salzburg - called the country's 2006 birthday bash a resounding success. "We didn't make Mozart a kitsch, we didn't bore people, and we made Mozart familiar to people who otherwise wouldn't have remembered to do so themselves," he said. Chief Mozart year organiser Peter Marboe said the nearly 3,000 events were also a commercial success, bringing in euro 15 million. The anniverary year is still winding down and won't be completed until the end of the month. Organisers said they expect the remaining festivities, which will culminate with a three-day festival at the end of January, to draw at least another 100,000 visitors. Millions more people in 50 - plus countries worldwide held their own celebrations last year. Because of the tremendous interest in classical music generated by the Mozart events, there are now plans to establish a European composers' alliance to better promote more contemporary EU musical talents.

| The Leech Thumb Rule |
| 01.26.07 (8:39 pm) [edit] |
|
The pain caused by osteoarthritis of the thumb is incapacitating enough for people to experience trouble when turning door handles and writing. It has recently been discovered that longer lasting relief from the pain of thumb arthritis can be provided by using blood-sucking leeches rather than from conventional medicines and ointments. The blood-sucking leeches inject hirudin, a blood-thinning chemical, along with several other substances that fight inflammation. This results in the continuous flow of blood in the leech's prey thereby providing relief to those suffering from thumb arthritis. The patients who were subjected to the leech therapy were reported to have suffered from half the pain a week after being given the treatment as compared to those patients undergoing normal medication. The relief caused by the leeches also lasted longer.

| Church in 'Da Vinci Code' Makes Big Profit |
| 01.26.07 (10:28 am) [edit] |
|
Myth and mystery has meant a cash bonanza for the medieval Scottish church featured in Dan Brown's best-selling book "The Da Vinci Code', church officials said on Thursday. Last year, when a film based on the book was launched, Rosslyn Chapel, near Edinburgh, made a record profit of almost one million dollars and hosted 170,000 visitors, more than a fivefold increase on preceding years. "Visitor numbers were rising before the book and the film, but have really taken off since "The Da Vinci Code", said Colin Glynne-Percy, who took over as director of the chapel's trustees this week. "We are delighted with this, but it is my job to make sure we find a balance between tourist demand and the needs of our parishioners, as this is after all a working church with a vibrant community." Brown's book suggests the medieval stone building in the Pentland hills, outside Edinburgh, could be the repository of the fabled Holy Grail. Known for its intricate stone carvings, the cross-shaped chapel was founded in 1446 by Sir William St. Clair, a Grand Master in the Knights Templar, an ancient order of benevolent knights. In 2005, the chapel trust recorded a profit of just over 590,000 dollars, which included a contribution from film producers Sony after film scenes featuring actor Tom Hanks were shot there. Filmmakers paid the chapel for four days of lost tourism revenue, a figure reported to be more than 19,100 pounds, though officials would not be specific. Before 2005, when it played host to 117,000 visitors, the chapel received an average of 30,000 visitors a year. Profits will go toward a church restoration project estimated to cost 23 million dollars, including major repairs to the roof.

| Update On Andrea |
| 01.25.07 (8:48 pm) [edit] |
|
Hi all,
I just got back from visiting Andrea in the rehab center in Salem. Her spirits are good, and she seems to be a little improved. She still has a long way to go, but that's what she's there to work on. She has four rehab classes a day- the last one is over about 3:30. I asked Andrea today if she would like to see visitors and she said she would, so feel free. When I arrived today at 4:00 she was sleeping. They bring her dinner about 5:00, so that might a good time to visit, as she'll be up for her meal anyway. I plan to be there every evening if posible. She's at (adress). Andrea had her head bandage removed today, and the sight of her with a crew-cut and scars on her head took a couple of seconds to get used to. Just wanted you to know what to expect. I'll try to find her a snazzy hat to wear, although as you'd expect, she doesn't care about it at all. On Tuesday her rehab therapists will have a meeting to assess how long she'll stay as an in-patient, and what her prognosis is. I'll let you know on what I learn. Thanks again for all your well wishes and support.
-John

| Kate Middleton |
| 01.24.07 (10:32 pm) [edit] |
|
Name : Kate Middleton Age : 25 Nationality : British Claim to Fame : Another Princess in Waiting Hounded by the Media
After more than a quarter of a century, the scene is being repeated. A young girl is hounded by the media as she tries hard to go about her everyday life just because she happens to be the lady love of the future king of England. Things were at their worst on January 9 when Kate, who turned 25 that day, stepped out of her house to go to work and come face to face with about 30 paparazzi and media men. It was a struggle for her to get to her car and a couple of photographers then stepped right in front to click some close-ups, making it difficult for her to drive away. The incident upset and frightened her so that it prompted a call to the police. This was the roughest treatment Kate has received from the media since her relationship with Prince William became known. It not only scared her but the royal family too and Kate has asked a law firm to draw up a plan to ward off unwanted media attention. Middleton's lawyers will seek word from newspapers that they will not send reporters and phtotgraphers to hound her. If the promises are breached, she will be able to bring about legal action against the publication and the photographers and will also invoke human rights laws to protect her privacy. Prince William, 24, was highly disturbed that his girlfriend is being treated in the same manner as his mother Princess Diana, who had a fatal accident when her car was chased by the paparazzi. Speaking through his spokesman, the young prince has asked the media to stop harassing her. Following this request by the royal family, UK's News International Group, which owns The Sun and News of the World, has imposed a ban on all News International publications printing paparazzi photos of Kate Middleton. The ban was lauded by the prince. Middleton, who works as an accessories merchandiser for apparel store, met William in 2001 when both were students at the university of St Andrews. The two started dating towards the end of 2003 and have been together since. Everyone is expecting the engagement announcement to come any time and there are clear indications that the royal family approves of her. Last month, whe was in attendance, along with the queen, at William's graduation from Sandhurst military academy. He has since joined the Blues and Royals, an elite cavalry regiment. There was even a report that Kate was invited by the Queen to Christmas lunch last December, making her the first unmarried partner of a royal to be asked to the festive celebrations at the royal estate of Sandringham House, Norfolk. Middleton, however, declined the offer preferring to spend Christmas with her own family. Memories of how the media eventually drove Princess Diana to her death are painful enough for the young prince to deal with and he now has his girlfriend's safety to worry about as well. They royal family may not have much to do besides making the right public appearances and statements, but these poor folks aren't free to do anything else with the media breathing down their neck, it's a hard life, even for a prince and a would-be princess.

| It's all in the Recquet |
| 01.24.07 (10:16 pm) [edit] |
|
Tennis is one of the major sports on the international calendar. In terms of the equipment required, it is a simple game involving a number of balls, a net and the all important recquet. The tennis racquet has seen its share of evolution since French monks started playing the game in the 11th and 12th centuries. Initially the game was played with bare hands with the ball being hit against a wall, much like handball. This was a little too painful and players tried variations such as wearing a glove with webbing between the fingers to wooden paddles. The 14th century saw the advent of the wooden racquet, an invention generally credited to the Italians and by 1500 racquets were widely used. This is how it stayed until 1874 when Major Walter C. Wingfield registered his patent in London for equipment and rules for outdoor (the game till then had been played indoors) lawn tennis. For the next hundred odd years, the wooden racquet hardly saw any change until they were replaced by the metal racquet in 1967, when Wilson Sporting became the first to introduce the popular T2000. Jimmy Connors used this racquet for much of the 1970s. Other popular racquets of that era were the Prince Classic and Prince Pro. These racquets were more flexible and powerful than their predecessors but unpredictable in terms of where the ball would end up once it hit the strings, because of the metal frame bending upon impact. A stiffer material was needed and found in the form of a mixture of carbon fibers bound by a plastic resin.Popularly known as 'graphite' (these racquets weren't true graphite) they soon became known as the best racquets in the sport. the most popular early graphite racquet was the Dunlop Max 200G used by John McEnroe and Steffi Graf. The evolution of the tennis racquet continues and new materials such as boron, titanium, fibreglass and Kevlar to name a few are being tried but always in a mix with graphite. So as you watch the Australian Open, besides marvelling at the players and their skill, you can also marvel at the tennis racquet.

| Tokyo Drift |
| 01.24.07 (10:07 pm) [edit] |
|
This third sequel in the Fast and the Furious series boasts of no star studded cast, with Lucas Black playing Sean, a troublesome young guy with a heavy Texan accent. Nathalie Kelley plays the leading lady, while other unfamiliar faces render supporting performances. The story involves Sean Boswell who has a Knack for racing the hell out of jacked-up cars. He is sent to Japan after his mom runs out of ideas about how to keep him out of trouble. After about 24 hours in Japan, Sean uncovers an underground scene in which boys race their cars while braking around turns, thus 'drifting' along. Although the entire plot is pretty lame, this concept of 'drifting' gives an interesting twist to the movie since the previous sequels were based on drag races. Although the lead man, Sean, is missing Van Deesel's natural charm. Paul Walker's abs and Tyrese's tanktop, Lucas still manages to create a reasonable impact with his good looks and southern accent. The film looks more like a silver screen version of the famous playstation game Mignight Club, since most of the scenes have been shot at night with the trademark Tokyo city night life at its best. Han (Sung Kang) plays a Japanese guy who becomes good friends with Sean and is one classy character, delivering an equally strong performance. The guest appearance (I don't want to spoil the surprise) in the end does create a stir, but overall, the film is mediocre.

| Zathura |
| 01.23.07 (10:39 am) [edit] |
Chris Van Allburg's books have already been adapted on the big screen. How can anyone forget the distractive jungle chaos of Jumanji or the winter hues of Polar Express? Joining them now is Zathura: a Space Adventure, aptly named and made with comfortable innocence, breathing a breath of fresh air into the family of cliched films. Josh, Danny and their older sister Lisa are left to spend time with their divorced dad (Tim Robbins in a small, charming role). But a tussle over who will get to spend more time with him escalates sibling rivalry, which reaches a feverrish pitch. Adding fuel to the situation, dad has to leave for work, leaving their sister in charge. Alone and bored, Danny comes across "Zathura", an old metal board game. With his first move, the living room is blown to pieces by meteors and with successive turn, the children get to go into apace in turn, meeting an astronaut and fighting flesh - eating aliens. The only way to get back to earth (as their house is floating in space) is by finishing the game. John Favreau with another impressive film under his belt is truly one of the upcoming directors to look forward to. Zathura has something to offer to almost every member of the family. A must watch for any good cinema buff; even those who didn't cotton to Jumanji will find something of interest here.

| Useful Tips for Office Space Hunting |
| 01.22.07 (9:59 pm) [edit] |
Looking for a good business location is as difficult as looking for residential property. Here are a few guidelines for those searching for the right office location. - Determine your needs before you start looking and be realistic about the necessities of your office, including ground floor, panoramic view, car park facilities, storage space etc.
- It is not imperative to go through a real estate agent. A corporate contact may provide useful information about the property in demand.
- Choose a location that is either close to your residence or where most of your existing and potential clients are located. If the nature of the business involves frequent client visits, look for a location that is easy to access and has ample parking space.
- For more space for less money, explore distant places rather than those centrally located in a commercial hub.
- Know the amount of square footage that fits your needs. Too much space means wasted money, and not enough can mean lost productivity. Consult a real estate advisor, architect or space planner to ascertain the area that you require.
- Choose an open plan office as opposed to pre-determined structural layouts to create space according to your own requirements.
- Keep in mind your company's growth over the next five years to ensure that you don't outgrow the property too soon.
- The average rent should be between four to five percent of your total operating costs.
- For a long-term investment, buy rather than rent.
- An office location in a commercial complex provides built-in support systems including stand-by generators, security, elevator, parking etc.
- Never change an office location out of desperation or when you are in a hurry.

Feel free to pass this on to any tBloggers you think would like to receive it. If anyone receives it more than once? -Oh well.
Thanks,
-sur

| 'Jungle Girl' Found in Combodia |
| 01.19.07 (10:59 pm) [edit] |
|
Jungle Girl (L). Photographed with her mother.
A Combodian woman who went missing in the jungle for 18 years before being found last week is struggling to adapt to life as a human and wants to return to the forest. "She perfers to crawl rather than walk like a human," said Mao Sun, a district police chief in the jungle-clad northeastern province of Rattanakiri where the girl's family live. "Unfortunately, she keeps crying and wants to go back to the jungle." he said and added: "She is not used to living with humans. We had to clothe her. When she is thirsty or hungry she points at her mouth." The girl, called Ro Cham H'pnhieng, went missing as an eight-year -old along with her cousin when they were sent to tend cows near the border with Vietnam. Villagers believed they had been eaten by wild animals until a girl was caught last week by a logging team as she was trying to steal some food they had left under a tree. With blackened skin and hair stretching down to her legs, she was unrecognisable apart from a scar across her back that allowed her father to pick her out. After 18 years in the wilderness, police said, she was able to say only three words: father, mother and stomach ache. Villagers from the Phnong hill tribe believe the girl is still possessed by evil spirits of the forest. They have brought in Buddhist monks to bless her and set up a round-the -clock watch on the family hut. In December 2004, four families in the same province emerged from 25 years in the jungle.

| Race Row Over British TV Show - Shilpa Shetty |
| 01.18.07 (10:12 pm) [edit] |
|
Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty's treatment by a handful of other contestants on a British reality television show sparked a wider debate on Thursday about the extent of racism and xenophobia in Britain. The apparent racist bullying of the 31-year-old actress on Channel 4's 'Celebrity Big Brother' may have been roundly condemned. The show has attracted 30,000 complaints to the broadcaster and British TV regulator. But while some commentators see race as playing no part, others fear that despite efforts to promote greater racial awareness, it shows intolerance and ignorance persist. Certainly, Shetty herself has wondered how representative the behaviour was of Britain, which is home to about 4.6 million people from ethnic minorities out of a total population of 58 million. "Is this what today's UK is? Scary. It's quite a shame actually," she said after a foul-mouthed tirade from fellow contestant Jade Goody on Wednesday. "Am I not human? What about me is so different?" Although one housemate tried to reason that her treatment had nothing to do with racism, Shetty - whose popularity has pushed her into pole position to win the contest - disagreed. In an editorial, The Independent viewed the number of complaints as proof of how much attitudes towards race had changed in Britain in recent years. But it considered the sniping about Indian hygiene, housing and culture showed that "barely submerged xenophobia in Britain is a significant phenomenon in our society still".

| Art Buchwald Dead |
| 01.18.07 (9:41 pm) [edit] |
|
Legendary US columnist Art Buchwald, whose biting humour appeared in newspapers around the world for more than 50 years, has died at the age of 81 on Thursday. "He died at home at around 11:40 last night," his son Joel told AFP. "He died peacefully in his sleep. I was there and my wife and his grandson." The cause of death was renal failure, he added. Buchwald was born in New York state and became a stringer for Variety magazine in the late 1940s. He worked as a syndicated columnist for the Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and Tribune Media Services from 1952 until his death. At one stage, he was the most syndicated columnist in the world. He returned to the United States from Paris in 1962 to write columns for the Washington Post and dozens of other newspapers, specialising in political satire. He wrote more than 30 books, including 'I'lli Always Have Paris', and in 1982, won the Pulitzer Prize for outstanding commentary.

| Patrolling the Streets |
| 01.18.07 (12:13 am) [edit] |

By this year, the United States Government hopes to release unmanned robotic cars to patrol the streets. Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the US governments's central research and development agency, has offered a two-million-dollar prize for the first robotic vehicle that can travel a 60-mile urban course in less than six hours. By holding events such as the Grand Challenge 2005, in which the cars have to avoid ditches, barbed wire and boulders, DARPA encourages the development of robotic car technology. The United States government has laid out plans to have city streets in the USA patrolled by robotic cars after being encouraged by the development made in the last Grand Challenge. Source : Spider

| Creating a New Reality |
| 01.18.07 (12:11 am) [edit] |
|
The basic thing that holds most of us from achieving success is that we lack selfesteem at the very deepest subconscious level. We place a ceiling on what we are capable of achieving, because it makes us feel better about ourselves and our own mediocre achievements. Somehow, it's easier to shield ourselves with dozens of excuses than to admit to ourselves that we could have done better, if only we had the nerve and the self-belief. As Michelangelo said, "The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it". The argument presented most often is that it's easy to say that one's attitude dictates the altitude that one may achieve in life. However, in reality a lot of other forces are in play. You may think that you cannot succeed because you do not have enough experience, or because you have financial problems and money begets money, or because you are disadvantaged in some other way. If so, you need to consider the examples of people like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. Both of these men had nothing more than basic schooling. Stevie Wonder is blind. the world's leading cosmologist, Stephen Hawking, is in a wheelchair and cannot even speak without a voice machine. Oprah Winfrey was born black and dirt-poor. Inerestingly, the prerequisite is NOT that you need any prior experience of talent in that which you seek. Rather, it is the purpose, backed with the perseverance to never give up in accomplishing it that brings about lasting success. By : Fauzia Kerai Khan, fauzia@iandbconsulting.com

| Sex and the City |
| 01.16.07 (11:57 am) [edit] |
|
Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends journey through singlehood in modern day New York in Sex and the City, a truly girly show based on a book by Candace Bushnell of the same name. Though there is no coherent plot, the show is narrative driven with Carrie's colourful comments on the lives of the four stars within. We have Carrie herself, who is a columnist, often interacting with fictional and non-fictional celebrities. The character is brilliantly portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker, who up until now was not finding much success on the big screen. Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) is a young, almost aristocratic, art dealer who sternly believes in traditions. Cynthia Nixon plays Miranda Hobbes, the career minded lawyer who has a pessimistic view of the world and yet is the voice of reason for the entire group. We finally come to Samantha (Kim Cattrall), the eldest of the group, but the youngest at heart and the secret star of the show. The first season introduces us to each character and also the premise of the show - New Youk City, which is a star of the show itself, not to mention a supporting cast of shoes, dresses and jewelry. The DVD box set is loaded with special features such as commentaries and behind-the-scene footage. Also inculded are cast interviews. This is a must-watch and must-have, especially for slumber parties. By : Khaver Siddiqi Source : Dawn

| Cactus |
| 01.16.07 (10:59 am) [edit] |
Think of a cactus and the first image that comes to mind is of thorns. Even the name cactus comes form the Greek word kaktos meaning a prickly plant. Yet for many of us, cacti are an integral part of our garden. There are two groups of cacti; the desert ones, usually with spines and the jungle or rainforest cacti, without spines. They come in unusual shapes, sizes, textures and folwer colours. Here are some tips on how to care for your cactus: - Two types of pots can be used for cacti; clay or plastic. Plastic pots are lighter, cheaper and require less watering. Clay pots provide better stability for taller plants and help avoid over-watering. Choose a flowerpot which is a smaller size than the plant as this will control humidity of the soil better.
- Cacti require different amounts of water in different seasons. Once a week in winter and twice a week in summer. During the rainy season when humidity levels are high, watering is not required.
- Cacti need air and light. Although they grow well indoors, they need to be taken outdoors every two to three days. When flowering, they should be placed in an air-conditioned room as the flowers are sensitive to temperature change and die quickly.
- Strange as it may sound, you can even sunburn a cactus. For an outside environment, they must first be acclimatised. Keep them in the shade for a few weeks, and then move them to an area with partial sunlight. If the cactus starts to acquire a lighter green or tan tint, it is probably sunburned.

| Grooving In Your Car |
| 01.15.07 (9:59 am) [edit] |
Mobile audio, the general term for entertainment system in cars has come a long way. Also known as In-Car Entertainment (ICE), it describes the sound system fitted in an automobile. A good sound system has become a necessity whether you are driving around town, on a highway or just waiting at the signal. The last three decades has seen a revolution in car audio designs starting with four and eight-track players to the present day innovations including CD and MP3 technology. Here is an insight into the world of car audio:- - A stock car audio is a preinstalled system done at the time of manufacturing; a custom car audio installation can involve a simple upgrade of the radio to full blown audio equipment customisation.
- Car systems purchased from the market frequently require adapting to the care's interior, one of the major complaints made by owners of luxury vehicles.
- A weakness in mobile audio system is the spectral balance, as many car audio systems over emphasise the bass and treble.
- Some of the high tech features available include touch screen display and voice recognition systems, which allow you to control many of the stereo's functions through spoken commands.
- If you are into really loud music then a subwoofer in the back and array of tweeters across the front are a necessity. A tip to installing tweeters is to place them on top of the dashboard. This allows the sound to bounce back from the windsheild glass and there is minimal loss.

| Applying for a Job at the CIA |
| 01.14.07 (10:52 am) [edit] |
|
A few months ago, there was an opening with the CIA for an assassin. These highly classified positions are hard to fill, and there's a lot of testing and background checks involved before you can even be considered for the position. After sending some applicants through the background checks, training and testing, they narrowed the possible choices down to two men and a woman, but only one position was available. The day came for the final test to see which peson would get the extremely secretive job. The CIA men administering the test took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow our instructions whatever the circumstances," they explained. "Inside this room, you will find your wife sitting in a chair. Take this gun and kill her." The man looked horrified and said, "You can't be serious! I could never shoot my wife!" "Well," said the CIA man, "you're definitely not the right man for this job then." So they brought the second man to the same door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow instructions no matter what the circumstances,"they explained to the second man. "Inside you will find your wife sitting in a chair. Take this gun and kill her." The second man looked a bit shocked, but nevertheless took the gun and went in the room. All was quiet for about 5 minutes; then the door opened. The man came out of the room with tears in his eyes. "I tried to shoot her; I just couldn't pull the trigger and shoot my wife. I guess I'm not the right man for the job." "No," the CIA man replied, "You don't have what it takes. Take your wife and go home." Now they only had the woman left to test. They led her to the same door to the same room and handed her the same gun. "We must be sure that you will follow instructions no matter what the circumstances; this is your final test. Inside you will find your husband sitting in a chair. Take this gun and kill him." The woman took the gun and opened the door. Before the door even closed all the way, the CIA men heard the gun start firing, one shot after another for 13 shots. Then all hell broke loose in the room. They heard screaming, rashing, and banging on the walls. This went on for several minutes; then all went quiet. The door opened slowly, and there stood the woman. She wiped the sweat from her brow and said, "You guys didn't tell me the gun was loaded with blanks. I had to beat the son of a bitch to death with the chair!" Source : Comedy Central.Com

| The Violent Gene |
| 01.13.07 (9:50 pm) [edit] |
|
Scientists have discovered a gene that sparks off an enzyme considered responsible for a person's ability to control his or her emotions: the monoamine oxydase A (MAOA) enzyme. Scientists also found that those genes which had a lesser content of MAOA were more consistently found in people who were unable to control their emotions when exposed to facial expressions depicting emotions or while recalling emotional experiences. The individuals who otherwise displayed very little brain activity in areas related to impulse-control, displayed intense brain activity in emotion-related brain structures. Those individuals reacted less emotionally and with more control over their impulses when exposed to the same stimuli who had a strong MAOA gene. This led to the conclusion that a weak MAOA gene is what contributes to uncontrollable violent behaviour. Source : Spider

Pit vipers can strike and kill their prey with extreme accuracy even after they have been blindfolded. The viper's infra-red sensing organs have been attributed as the cause of that. However, the pit organ on each side of their face has been credited to the level of accuracy with which the vipers hit their target. Providing a blurry picture of the objects around them, these pit organs or "holes" are supposed to work as pin-hole cameras. What provides the final details of the snake's potential prey, allowing them to create a graphic, mental image of the animal around them, are the heat sensors situated within the membranes. Scientists created a model that mimicked the functionalities of the snake's pit organ which resulted in surprisingly accurate results.

| Memory of an Ape |
| 01.11.07 (10:04 pm) [edit] |
|
Animals remember things by either remembering an object's features or by remembering its location. By performing some memory experiments, scientists have found that apes tend to employ the place-based strategy as do one-year-old babies. This has led them to conclude that there is a definite similarity in the structure and cognitive processes of the brain of an ape and that of a human. However, human babies tend to switch to a feature-based strategy of remembering things as they grow older and depict signs of doing so at as early as three years of age.

| 01.11.07 (8:40 pm) [edit] |
|
The world's top Internet search engine, Google forged an alliance with China Mobile to provide mobile and Internet services in China. Google said in a statement that it would provide technology to China Mobile, the nation's Largest handeset operator, allowing searches on the Chinese firm's Monternet WAP portal. the service entered trial operations in December and would be rolled out in early 2007, the Mountain View, California-based company said. China's 132 million online users rank second only to the United States as the would's largest Internet market, making for potentially mouth-watering revenue opportunities. Last month, US software giant Microsoft and Chinese Internet search portal Baidu joined forces, with Microsoft to display Baidu search advertising on its MSN, Live and other websites in China. However, the competition is fierce, and eBay only last month announced it was downgrading its presence in China, handing control of its main website to Beijing-based wireless services group TOM online.

| Five Facts About Carlo Ponti |
| 01.11.07 (10:36 am) [edit] |
Carlo Ponti, one of Italy's best-known film producers and the husband of actress Sophia Loren, has died at the age of 94, on Wednesday. Here are five facts about him: - Ponti started out as a lawyer and began making films by chance in 1938 when a producer who was a client of the law firm where Ponti worked had to flee Italy and asked him to take over.
- He preferred making quality movies to box-office hits and often said: "I don't make deals, I make pictures." Best known for producing "Dr. Zhivago" in 1965, other classics to his name include "Lastrada" (1954), "Marriage Italian Style" (1964), "Blowup" (1966) and "A Special Day" (1977).
- Ponti and Loren met in 1952 when Ponti, married and already an established producer, cast his vote for a poor girl from a Naples slum in a beauty contest. Twenty years her senior, he gave Loren her first movie role.
- Their affair created a furore in Roman Catholic Italy and Ponti was charged with bigamy. The couple fled the country in 1957 to marry in Mexico and moved to Hollywood. Ponti was not acquitted of bigamy until 1968.
- Pointi took French citizenship in 1965, During his long absence, an Italian court sentenced him in 1979 to four years in jail and a 26 - million-dollar fine, on charges of illegally exporting capital. The Supreme Court dismissed the charges in 1987 and released his frozen assets.

| Slim Waist is Eternal Standared of Beauty |
| 01.10.07 (9:20 am) [edit] |
|
Feminine beauty has been celebrated across the ages, but an enduring belief is this: what constitutes attractiveness in a woman cannot be pinned down - it depends on the prevailing fashion, culture or ethnicity and on the eye of the beholder. For instance, in Victorian England, a tiny, puckered mouth was the zenith of pulchritude. Today, the rosebud look has been replaced by what has been called the trout look, as women in Western cultures strive to make their mouths look as wide and full-lipped as possible. In many societies, the focus of attractiveness has roamed over ankles, necks and knees and makeup and hairstyles change according to the mode. The desired female morphology has shifted too, driven in part by prosperity and the social advancement of women. In the 1950s, Marilyn Monroe was the template of feminine beauty; today, she would be encouraged to sign up at Weightwatchers. So it would seem that the "beauty standard" does not exist - that there is no eternal benchmark, only a chaotically whizzing merry-go-round. Not so for evolutionary psychologists. For them, fashion is a fluffy cover for a force that is deeper, remorseless and unchanging, as old and enduring as our genes: the Darwinian drive of survival and genetic fitness. In an innovative test of these rival hypotheses, scientists at the University of Texas at Austin and at Harvard University traveled through three centuries of English-language literature and through three Asian literary classics dating back nearly tow thousand years. Their goal: Which parts of the woman's body were praised as beautiful by writers across the ages? Their sources were a website, Literature Online, for English literature from the 16th, 17th and 18th century; Chinese sixth dynasty palace poetry (from the fourth to the sixth century AD) and two ancient Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, from the first to third century AD. A slim waist trumped all other yardsticks. In English literature, a glowing description of a narrow waist (a waist "as little as a wand", "beholden to her lovely waist" and so on) showed up 65 times, while all other barometers put together occurred a mere 15 times. Before anyone cries fattism, the literature was studded with romantic tributes to plumpness but relatively few to slimness. But what counted, plump woman or slim, was the relative narrowness of the waist. There was not a single evocation of beauty which said the object of veneration had a bulging tummy. In the Asian works, the slim waist was even more adored, although there was no flattering reference to plump beauty. Narrow waist scored a massive 35 references in the two Indian epics, while the other body parts garnered a total of 26. In the Chinese poetry, the narrow waist was evoked 17 times, while others got zero. The study, which appears in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, a British journal, says these references show that a slim waist is an object of desire that spans time and cultures. Modern research has established a link between abdominal obesity and decreased oestrogen, reduced fecundity and increased risk of major diseases. But "even without the benefit of modern medical knowledge, both British and Asian writers intuited the biological link between health and beauty." say authors, Devendra Singh, Peter Renn and Adrian Singh. "In spite of variation in the description of beauty, the marker of health and fertility - a small waist - has always been an invariant symbol of feminine beauty".

| Manner of Saddam's Execution Wrong: Blair |
| 01.09.07 (9:29 pm) [edit] |
|
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Tuesday that the way Saddam Hussein was executed was completely wrong', in his first reaction to the hanging of the former Iraqi leader. "The manner of the execution of Saddam Hussein was completely wrong, but that should not blind us to the crimes he committed against his people," he said at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Mr Blair had declined until now to answer questions about Saddam's hanging. Widespread criticism was fuelled by a grainy mobile phone video of the execution, which showed Saddam being taunted by officials seconds before the noose was put around his head. "The manner of the execution is unacceptable and it's wrong. But we should ... not ... lurch into a position of forgetting the victims of Saddam," said Mr Blair.

| Smart Scorpions |
| 01.08.07 (11:50 pm) [edit] |
|
Scientists have recently discovered that the venom of the yellow lsraeli scorpion can be used to treat high-grade brain glioma - a type of cancer that affects 17000 people a year and kills 98 per cent of those affected. The venom of the yellow lsraeli scorpion contains around a 100 different kinds of toxins. What makes it an ideal treatment for those suffering from the cancer is that the venom from these scorpions contains a protein that will seek and bind itself only to the brain-cancer cells. The conventional way of treating cancer is by using radiation. With this discovery, however, scientists now have a more accurate way of treating this type of cancer.

| Dunes on Saturn |
| 01.08.07 (11:31 pm) [edit] |
|
It has been discovered that Titan, the largest moon orbiting the planet Saturn, has sand dunes. Radar images display 100-kilometre-long dark strips similar to those found in Africa and Saudi Arabia. The Titan also has winds, not formed by the Sun, but by the strong gravitational pull of Saturn. These winds blow the sand into piles and causes erosion to break rocks into sand. Studies have shown that the size of the average sand grain is roughly three times bigger than that found on Earth and scientists are still not clear as to what constitutes the sand on Titan. They do know that it is not made of silica since there are no rock particles exposed on the moon. Similar to how rock is eroded by water on Earth there have been glimpses of channels carved into the ice surface, presumably by liquid methane. Source: Spider

Scientists have discovered that there is a certain kind of human body odour that repels mosquitoes from attacking certain people. Chemicals in the person's body odour are currently being picked out by scientists with the hope of creating a repellent that could be used to prevent the spread of mosquitobite related diseases such as Malaria and Yellow Fever. The repellent would be so potent that it could be applied on a person's clothes instead of directly on the skin. Scientists are currently working on increasing the longevity of the effect of the repellent. Source: Spider

| Rising Oceans |
| 01.05.07 (10:24 am) [edit] |
|
According to the studies made by researchers, the level of the sea will be three feet higher than it is today by the end of the century with global warming believed to be the main cause. Glacial earthquakes, usually taking place in July and August, have more than doubled since 2002. Water from melting ice sheets and glaciers, besides ending up in the ocean, can in the long-run flood cities, cause storms along coastal areas and submerge islands. According to a NASA glaciologist, if the increase in pollution continues the way it does right now, irreversible damage will be caused to part of the Greenland and Antarctica ice sheet.

| What Happens in Heaven ? |
| 01.04.07 (8:27 pm) [edit] |
|
I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We walked side-by-side inside a large work room filled with angels. My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, "This is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received." I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world. Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section. The angel then said to me, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them." I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth. Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. "This is the Aknowledgment Section," my angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed "How is it that? There's no work going on here?"I asked. "So sad," the angel sighed. "After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments. "How does one acknowledge God's blessings?" I asked. "Simple," the angel answered. "Just say, "Thank you, Lord." "What blessings should they acknowledge? " I asked. "If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world. "If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy. "And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity. " Also ..... "If you woke up this morning with more health than illness ....you are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day. "If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation .. you are ahead of 700 million people in the world. "If you go for prayers without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world. "If your parents are still alive and still married .. you are very rare. If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you're unique to all those in doubt and despair." Ok, what now? How can I start? If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you as very special and you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all. Have a good day, count your blessings, and if you want, pass this along to remind everyone else how blessed we all are. Attn: Acknowledgement Deptartment: Thank You Lord! "Thank you Lord, for giving me the ability to share this message and for giving me so many wonderful people to share it with". Source: A Forwarded Mail

| Why Surgeons are More Handsome |
| 01.04.07 (8:16 am) [edit] |
|
Ever wondered why, in hospitals, surgeons are usually tall, handsome and confident whereas ward doctors look smaller, rundown and put-upon? An offbeat research paper that appears in British Medical Journal (BMJ) this weekend puts this anecdotal evidence to the test. four doctors at the Hospital Clinic at the University of Barcelona, Spain, recruited 12 surgeons and 14 physicians, all of them men, for a quirky study into medical looks. The volunteers filled in a questionnaire giving their vital statistics and sent their pictures. These were matched against photographs of a "control" group of movie stars in medical roles. Both sets were assessed for handsomeness by a female jury comprising three doctors and five nurses. Unsurprisingly, the actors - Clooney, Harrison Ford, Patrick Dempsey and Hugh Laurie - came out tops, gaining an average droolability score of 5.96. That compared with 4.39 for the real-life surgeons, whereas the physicians trailed rather pitifully, with 3.65. But, curiously it also transpired that the surgeons were in fact significantly taller than the physicians - by nearly seven centimetres (Three inches) on average. It seems unfair that surgeons should win out in looks and height, but there could be "evolutionary" reasons, the authors say, their tongues firmly in cheek. Their extra height makes them more likely to be masters and commanders, and gives them a better view of the operating room, including the patient lying on the table, "they suggest. They admit, thought, that the clog-type shoes worn in the sperating theatre would also give a surgeon a lift - literally. the surgeons fresh good looks are also helped by the fact that they work in the cleaner, cooler air of the operating room, where there is a higher oxygen content. Plus they get to wear surgical masks "a barrier to facial microtrauma," and this could keep their complexion rosy. In contrast, " physicians tend to hang heavy stethoscopes around their necks, which bows their heads forward and reduces their perceived height, " the study wryly suggests.

| Spruce up Your Wheels |
| 01.04.07 (7:40 am) [edit] |
Adorning a car is a passion indeed! One of the ways to do just that is by having the right rims for your car. Gone are the days of hubcaps, rims today serve the purpose of protecting and beautifying tyres. Here is an all-purpose guideline to rims. - Most rims are made of aluminium alloy and have replaced steel rims which used to add unwanted weight and reduce performance. Technology offers rims made of carbon fibre, thermoplastic and wood.
- Single wall rims are less expensive and weaker compared to double wall rims, which reduce aerodynamic drag and provide additional strength.
- Common types include alloy, chrome and spinning. these differ in design, price, size, weight and mounting options.
- Alloy rims are made from aluminium and are lightweight, dissipate heat rapidly and improve mileage.
- Chrome rims can be made of any metal and plated with chrome and polished to provide a mirror effect.
- Spinners are customised rims which have a free spinning exterior portion that keeps rotating when the vehicle stops. this is achieved by using a roller bearing.
- The size of the rim varies with the size of the car. Smaller cars have rims of 13 inches in diameter and go up to 27 inches and beyond for larger cars. Rear wheel drive vehicles typically need rims two inches larger in diameter than front wheel drive vehicles.
- "Plus sizing" refers to increasing the size of the car rim in proportion to the wheel. It enhances the look; gives better steering response and the ability to handle corners efficiently as a larger surface area of the wheel comes in contact with the road.

| Mute Wedding |
| 01.03.07 (1:21 am) [edit] |
|
I happened to attend a wedding of a special person the other day. He is special because he is deaf and dumb. It was an impressive function. Most of the guests were mute (special). As the bride was special too therefore most of their friends were mute. The way they were expressing each other's thought and feelings to each other was indeed worth witnessing. Few salients to mention here :- 1. I could hear the silence. 2. They did not need any music to dance and they danced to the tunes in their minds. 3. Synchro-dancing of two of groom's friends was worth watching. 4. Their eyes reflected more love than ours. 5. It was a lifetime experience.

| Augusto Pinochet |
| 01.01.07 (8:56 pm) [edit] |
|
Name: Augusto Pinochet Age: The count finally stopped at 91 Nationality: Chilean Claim to fame: A dictator or a saviour?
Pinochet has left behind a legacy that will be disputed for a long time to come. The news of his death led to both celebrations and mourning in Chile, and while his funeral was taking place in the Chilean capital Santiago, there were clashes on the streets between his supporters and opponents. Up to 60,000 people are said to have flocked for the public viewing of Pinochet's casket, and thousands turned out for his funeral on Tuesday last. The Chilean ex-dictator received full military rites but not a state funeral which was denied by President Michelle Bachelet, whose father was tortured and died during Pinochet's 1973-1990 regime. Bachelet was herself tortured alongside her mother. And she is not the only one who suffered when he overthrew the democratically-elected socialist government of President Salvador Allende in a coup in September 1973. Pinochet's forces killed around 3,000 opponents and suspected opponents during his rule. Many military police officers also died in the political violence and some 28,000 people were tortured by his secret police, while hundreds of thousands of Chileans fled into exile. As for his supporters, they say he saved the country from communism, chaos and possible civil war, and that it was due to his free-market reforms which led to economic stability in Chile. Had he not taken over, they argue, there would have been a Communist take-over and alignment with the Soviet Union. Born on November 25, 1915, Pinochet opted on a military career on the insistence of his mother. As early as the 1950s, he was involved in political struggles when he headed the clampdown on the Chilean Communist party, but he had little political ambitions at this point. In June 1973, he was made commander-in-chief of the army because he was trusted by President Allende. But a few months later, in September 1973, President Allende realized his mistake when he lost his life in a coup led by Gen Pinochet. It was Gen Pinochet who ordered many of the actions that saw more than 3,000 supporters of the Allende regime killed, thousands tortured and many more forced into exile. He closed the Chilean Parliament, banned all political and trade union activities, and appointed himself president in 1974. General Pinochet continued to rule on through the 1980s, but discontentment among the masses grew, underestimated by him. In the plebiscite held in 1988, to his utter surprise, Pinochet lost. By 1990 he had to reluctantly step down as president, but he remained commander-in-chief of the army. In that position, he frequently prevented the prosecution of members of the security forces suspected of human rights abuses during his 17-year military regime, and blocked any radical political changes. In 1998, Gen Pinochet finally relinquished his post as commander-in-chief. But the very next day he became a senator-for-life, another position he had created for himself. He was finally arrested in London in October the same year, after an extradition request from Spain. After more than a year in custody, the general was allowed to returen to Chile in March 2000, but only after it was declared that he was not well enough to stand trial. In July 2002, all charges against General Pinochet were dropped after a ruling that he was mentally unfit to stand trial. General Pinochet has always defended his actions as those of a patriot who rescued his country from chaos and the threat of communism. But there are many who don't buy his argument and never will.
