  1. Better memory is good but sometimes forgetfulness also helps in relaxing the brain muscles.
  2. Browse through a book store or the public library.
  3. Buy a back and neck massager and put it to good use.
  4. Challenge yourself with a good crossword puzzle.
  5. Close your eyes and think of a serene place. Visit that place in your mind's eye.
  6. Close your eyes, breathe out the tension and stress. Feel them going out of your body. Take a glass of water and start sipping it as if you are being offered nectar from Heaven. It is a great relaxation exercise.
  7. With your eyes closed try to imagine the breath going in and out of your nostrils for few minutes. Concentrate on your nostrils and the breath. It will enhance your work capability.

  1. A good and helpful attitude is contagious, it spreads happiness.
  2. Act like a kid sometimes: do mischief and tease your spouse.
  3. After a long day, place hot compresses on your eyes for a few minutes.
  4. After you have done all, you can, to improve a situation, forget about it.
  5. Appreciate life itself. It is not a bed of roses and do not expect too much from it.
  6. Appreciate the vibrant colors of changing leaves in autumn. Stay for a while to see it.
  7. Arrive early for all meetings and appointments. Pre-meeting meetings are always useful.
  8. Avoid confrontation. In it even the winner is a loser.

Writing Contest with Incredibles Prizes - By Irles
11.24.06 (10:18 am)   [edit]

Here are the contest instructions:

-- Write a story using one of the following writing prompts:

1) Imagine if your favorite character from 19th-century English fiction had been born without ears. Then write a short story about him winning 50,000 Sterling Pounds at the Monte Carlo Casino.

2) Write a story that ends with the following sentence: ' "Let me go. You… you… to talk of love. You don’t know what it is. Let me go… let me go!"

3) Think of the most important secret your best friend has ever entrusted you with. Write a story in which you reveal it to everyone, here in my blog. Write it again from the point of view of your ex-best friend.

4) Your secondary character finds a box of scorched Yetti pubis hair. How did it get there?

5) Write a short scene set at a forest with a river, pine trees and shit. Throw some exotic birds in there, too.

6) Popular music is often a good source of writing inspiration. Rewrite Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" as a play.

* * *

-- Make sure the story is 500 words or less.

-- Send your story, pasted into the body of the 'comment' below.

-- Send your story by 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 21, 2016.

-- Mr. 69Whisper has graciously agreed to judge the contest.

-- We'll reveal the prizes next week.

Protect Your Child from Obesity
11.23.06 (8:42 am)   [edit]

Children spend huge amounts of their free time, sleeping, watching TV, playing video games and surfing the internet. In such a scenario, childhood obesity is a major cause of concern as it is a major risk factor for disease such as diabetes, hypertension and elevated blood cholestrol. It also tends to lead to adult obesity and overweight adolescents may suffer long-term social discrimination.
With the risks associated with childhood obesity it is necessary to redirect children's energies towards physical activity. Benefits include:
- Reduction in the risk associated with childhood obesity
- Helping children build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints
- Teaching them the skills needed for social interaction
- Helping them learn to problem solve, as issues may arise while playing
- Reducing feelings of depression and anxiety
- Enhancing a child's self-esteem by helping increase the level of confidence, assertiveness, emotional stability, independence, and self control.
Research done on the brain suggest that what makes us move is also what makes us think. Physical activity builds the framework for cognition and brain development which increases the capacity to learn, and assist in the development and refinement of perceptual abilities involving vision and balance.

Braking News
11.21.06 (6:01 am)   [edit]
Changing the oil and fluids in a vehicle is always a change for the better. Dirty engine oil and transmission fluids are bad news for a car, but what about brake fluid? Many motorists know that this fluid should be topped off, but do they know if it ought to be changes?
Brake fluid in the typical vehicle can become contaminated in two years or less. This happens due to moisture absorption. Under heavy braking conditions, including mountainous or hilly driving or when towing a trailer, moisture in the overheated fluid vaporises and braking efficiency reduces.
Brake problems vary with the make, model and age of a car and other variables. Here is how to check if there is a problem:-
  1. Step off the brakes with the car's engine turned off. A soft or mushy brake pedal indicates a low or high level of brake fluid
  2. If it is safe, drive the car at a low speed, braking when needed. If your brakes squeel, you may need new pads or to clean the brakes
  3. In a clear area, step sharply on the brake pedal. If the brakes do not stop the car effectively, several things may be wrong, including worn pads, contaminated brake fluid or brake pads
  4. If brakes pull the car to one side you may have insufficient hydraulic pressure in one part of the brake system. you may need to adjust the brake's clearance, or replace the pads or rotors
  5. Begin driving forward slowly. If the brakes bind or drag, it may be due to grease on the pads or scored rotors

Birthday Present
11.18.06 (11:22 pm)   [edit]

Boss complained to his secretary that he didn't know what to get his wife for her birthday. "She really has everything you could think of , and anyways, she can buy herself whatever she likes."
"Here's an idea," said the secretary. "Make up your own gift certificate that says, 'Thirty minutes of great loving, any way you want it.' I guarantee she'll be enchanted."
The next day, secretary asked, "well? Did you take my suggestion boss?"
"Yes," said the boss.
"did she take it?"
"Oh, yes! She jumped up, kissed me on the forehead and ran out the door, yelling, 'See you in 30 minutes!' "

Someone who changes your life
just by being part of it.
Someone who makes you laugh
until you can't stop;
Someone who makes you believe
that there really is good in the world.
Someone who convinces you
that there really is an unlocked door
just waiting for you to open it.

This is Forever Friendship.

Achievement Quotes

  1. Until you try, you don't know what you can't do. (Henry James)
  2. All achievement, all earned riches, have their beginning in an idea ! (Napoleon Hill)
  3. The men of great achievement are, and they have always been, those who deliberately feed, shape and control their own egos, leaving no part of the task to luck or chance, or to the varying vicissitudes of life. (Napoleon Hill)
  4. Modern psychology now offers you a way by which you can use your intelligence many many times more successfully. By doing so you will not only conquer most of the troubles in your life, but acheive the desires that for years you have found impossible of realization. (Dr. David Seabury)
  5. While it is true that you can get happiness and peace and serenity from being at the lower end of the ladder, it is also true that you can not enjoy the ecstasy of achievement. Success, in a generally accepted sense of the term, means the opportunity to experience and to realize to the maximum the forces that are within us. (General David Sarnoff)

Nowhere Airways
11.14.06 (12:37 am)   [edit]

Good morning, dudes and dudies. This is your very handsome captain GWB welcoming you to Nowhere Airways. Sorry we are four days late in taking off but I had to do some overtime at the bakery. This is our... one, two, ummmmm.... sixth flight to New York. We cannot guarantee that we will end up there but rest assured it will be somewhere in the East. And if we are very lucky we may even be landing exactly in New York! A real American will land where he wants to, isn't that right fellas??
Today we have 12 passengers on the plane - which is a bit of a problem because we only have 5 seats! Hmmm. For safety reasons we will be counting all the passengers again during and after the flight. We have a very good record for safety. In fact we are so safe even terrorists are afraid to fly with us! I am pleased to tell you that over 50% of our passengers end up at their destination. For those of you who don't make it, don't worry. Our staff has lots of experience consoling the next-of-kin. If however you are still worried then ask Stewardess Vampy to tell you about our out-of-court settlements. We will do everything to make your journey an enjoyable one and even a surviving one!
If our engines are too noisy for you, don't worry, we'll turn them off! We even make your fall to earth pleasant by serving complimentary coffee during free-fall! Sadly, today's in-flight movie will not be shown because my son forgot to record it from the television. But if you really want to see a film then we will be glad to fly next to PanAm plane so that you can look at their movie through the window. Although there is no-smoking in this airplane, you may find that during the flight you can see smoke in the cabin. Don't worry your good minds over this! It is only the early warning system on the engines telling us to slow down! Yes! we are very advanced at Nowhere Airways.
Some airlines are happy to fly thousands of feet over landmarks but not Nowhere Airways! For your pleasure we try to get as close as possible for the best view. If, however, we go a little too close then please let us know. Our co-pilot sometimes becomes too enthusiastic. Remember the guy who crashed before hitting the White House? Well he is the one!
Now kindly sit on your stool and tie your belt. For those of you who can't find a belt please tie your tie to the door handle. And for those of you who can't find a stool, sit on your suitcase instead. Sorry, but I won't be flying with you today because I have to attend my nephew's wedding. But please make yourself at home and help yourself to the cock pit. Thank you for choosing Nowhere Airways. We may not always take you to your destination but a splash in the Atlantic is guaranteed!

An Ideal Letter From Mom
11.14.06 (12:17 am)   [edit]

Dearest Son,
I am writing this letter slow because I know you can't read fast. We don't live where we did when you left home. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen 20 miles from your home, so we moved! I won't be able to give you the address as the last person who stayed in this house took the numbers with him for their next house, so that they dont have to change their address.
The weather here isn't too bad. It rained only twice last week. The first time it rained for three days and the second time for four days.
The coat you wanted me to send you, your aunt said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with all the buttons, so we cut them off and put them in the pocket.
We got another bill from the funeral home. It said that if we don't make the last payment on grandma's funeral, she will come up again.
Your father got another job. He has 500 men under him. He is cutting the grass in the cemetery.
Your sister had a baby this morning, I haven't found out whether it is a boy or a girl, so I don't know whether you are an uncle or an aunty.
Your Uncle fell into a whisky vat. Some men tried to pull him out, but he fought them off and drowned. We cremated him and he burned for three days.
Three of your friends went off the bridge in a pick-up truck. One was driving and the other two were in the back. The driver got out- he rolled the window down and swam to safety. The other two friends drowned, as they couldn't get the gate down.
There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened.
Love, Mom
P.S. - I was going to send you some money, but the envelope was already sealed.

Admit your faults
Be tolerant, be polite, be accomodating
No one is perfect, forget each other's faults
The peculiar quality of a fussy man is to see the faults of others and to forget his own
Couples don't behave like mad for long. They dispel their anger before long and smile again
How to be happily married can never be taught, but only learnt
Marriage holds no guarantee. If you want a guarantee, better buy a washing machine
Marriage is not a destination. It is only a journey towards a happy family where love prevails all around
Share each other's joy, feel each other's pains
Count on each other's strength, forgive each other's weaknesses

Eat More & Weigh Less !
11.10.06 (10:25 am)   [edit]
Don't Give Up All Your Favourites, But Try Food With Less 'Density'
In this land of growing girth where 66% of adults are now overweight or obese, some people have managed to stay at a healthy weight. Are they depriving themselves by eating tiny portions and giving up their favourite food? You'll be pleased to hear that the answer is NO.
How do they do it? One trick is to learn which foods will fill you up without a lot of calories.
We study this in My Lab at Penn State. In one type of study, we bring people into our laboratory, offer them various types of foods and see which onesfill them up the most. We conduct long-term trials to find out whether different type of dietry advice can actually help people loose weight and maintain that loss. We also analyze information from large surveys of what Americans eat.
Each of these different approaches has led us to the same conclusion: If most of your food choices pack lots of calories into each bite - we call these foods "calorie-dense" - you overeat and get too many calories. Calorie-dense foods - for example, chips, cookies, pretzels and crackers - tend to be low in moisture and some also may be high in fat.
So how can you eat more and weigh less?
Choose soups, vegetables. Surprisingly, the component of foods that has the biggest impact on how much food you eat is water. Water adds weight and volume to foods without adding calories - it lowers the calorie density of foods. Water-rich foods include vegetables, fruits and soups. Our studies show that eating a diet low in calorie density helps people eat fewer calories while still eating a satisfactory amount of food.
Several of our studies have looked at the best ways to include low-calorie-dense foods in a meal. We found, for example, that eating a 100-calorie bowl of broth-based soup or a green salad at the start of a meal takes the edge off your hunger. Even with the extra course of soup or salad, you are likely to eat fewer total calories during the meal.
Another effective approach is to add vegetables to your favourite mixed dishes - bulk up chili, stews and even macaroni and cheese with water-rich veggies like broccoli, carrots or tomatoes. Our studies show that you are likely to eat the same portion of food as usual and will be satisfied with fewer calories because some of the space in the bowl is taken up by low-calorie-dense vegetables. People tend to dish out the same portion, so why not make it lower in calories?
Eat for nutrition, as well as weight.
A low-density meal is the ultimate value meal, one that gives you fewer calories and more nutrients in satisfying portions.
An analysis of what 7,356 U.S. adults reported eating, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition earlier this year, showed that those eating a diet low in calorie density - rich in vegetables, fruits and other high-water foods - ate fewer calories per day 425 less for men, 275 less for women). And by choosing these foods, they were able to eat bigger portions without breaking the calorie bank.

Why All Mums Say Baby Looks Just Like Daddy
11.09.06 (11:22 pm)   [edit]
It is a much favoured pastime for parents, spotting the parental likenesses in their new arrival. But there may be more to mummy's assessment than meets the eye (or the nose, mouth or dimpled chin).
A new mother, research suggests, is most likely to find paternal similarities in her baby, even when there aren't any babies who look like their dads.
Her motives, according to the experts, are self-serving and built firmly into her evolutionary psyche. Seemingly innocent comments such as 'He's got his father's eyes' or 'She's got her daddy's hair' are infact a concerted, if subconcious, effort by a mother to convince their partner that he really is the father.
Scientists who conducted the research beleive the female strategy has evolved over time to allay male anxiety about paternity. If a father is reassured that the child looks just like him, it makes him fatherly and more prepared to look after both infant and mother, they conclude.
There are many high profile instances in which such devious tactics would not apear to be necessary, of course. Mick Jagger insisted on a DNA test to prove his son Lucas by model Luciana Morad, despite facial traits which have since developed into a quite dramatic likeness.
Although Jagger disputed paternity until it was proved he was the father, he is now close to his son and contributes to his upkeep.
Boris Becker, who also disputed parenthood following a fleeting affair - in his case a fumble in a restaurant room cupboard - need hardly have bothered with the DNA test, as the unmistakeable features of red-haired Anna, now six, began to emerge.

Oprah Winfrey & Diet Books
11.09.06 (11:10 pm)   [edit]
The Oprah Book Club has been quiet for months, but the Winfrey touch remains golden. Just ask the publishers of diet doctors Michaael F. Roizen and Mehment C.Oz.
Since an apearence last Thursday on Winfrey's television talk show, books by Roizen and Oz have occupied the top three spots on the best seller list of amazon.com, with customers buying both the book alone and the book and DVD of their new work, "YOU: On a Diet," and the handcover edition of a previous text, "YOU: The Owner's Manual," a million seller in 2005, thanks in part to Winfrey.

Let me clarify one thing. I never said to anyone that these are my eyes (the previous one). LadyG and surrogate will bear me out, they had tmailed me to ask about those lovely eyes and i told them to guess. They made wild guesses and after i gave them a hint or two, they immediately recognized. So anyone who asked me about those eyes were tolad that these are Princess Diana's eyes. I never had the intention to replicate them as my own. How can a man's eyes  match to a woman's  ? and that too a Princess ?

Ladies and Gentleman, Mimi suggested and I removed Princess Diana's eyes (it was hard to do this though) and put there my own. By doing this I am afraid i will loose many visitors :) and Mimi will be held responsible for this. :)

Sex on the Brain - Why women , men really are of two minds
11.07.06 (10:22 am)   [edit]
"Is not a problem that a woman have smaller brain than a man ? "  Comedian Sach Baron Cohen asks this question in his new movie, "Borat" -engaging a group of veteran feminists in the process- but, weirdly enough, the cartoonish Kazakh's query is based in scientific fact.
Turns out the satirist's cousin is renowned British psychopathology professor Simon Baron Cohen, who literally wrote the book on it: "The Essential Difference: The Truth About the Male and Female Brain."
The scholarly Baron Cohen is one of the leaders of the scientific trend of gender-specific studies, devoted to the proposition that men and women are different. Really different. Right down to their individual brain cells.
"People assume that men and women are interchangeable, and that's just not so," says Dr. Marianne Legato, founder of the Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University and author of the 2005 book "Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget."
According to Legato, the medial community needs to know a lot more about how men and women work, from their brain chemistry to their vital organs, in order to better treat them. in centuries past, men were almost always the subject of medial research (women were merely seen as "small men"), but more recently, the pendulum has swung the other way.
These days, studies devoted exclusively to women's health are far more common - "and we felt men deserved unique attention," says Legato, "so we separated them from women."
In her book, the Columbia professor explores the chemistry of male and female brains - and, using up-to-the-minute medial research, reinforces some cherished "Men Are From Mars" stereotypes:
- Women remember better even things that happen really a long time ago.
- Men are better at map-reading. They also get turned on a lot easier.
- Women thrive on talking and spending time in groups; men like to do things on their own.
But all this isn't quite simple as it sounds. For example: A woman's brain is, in fact, about ten percent smaller than a man's , even when factoring in physical size difference - but it also has a lot more going on, neuron-connection-wise. In other words , writes Legato, "women get more brain bang for the buck."
Thanks to Stone Age wiring, women also have a far greater capacity for understanding speech and body language, and have "elepantine" memories, especially when it comes to negative experiences.
Looking at primitive societies explains why this is so, says Legato: Women spent much of their time in domestic communities, talking with other women and children. And having a good memory for for which situations are perilous makes sense when you're a caretaker - whereas "if a man has perfect recall of how scared he felt during the last mammoth hunt, he'll be far less enthusiastic about going out this time," Legato writes.
But women's language-heavy brains can work against them when it comes to modern-day-relationships, says the professor.
"Did you ever see a baby who's exausted at the end of the day, and he can't stop crying, and his face is purple? Many women talk themselves to that state. They're exausted and they continue to talk. It's important to say your piece.... and then, be quiet."
Men have a much better approach to arguing with a mate, she says: When in doubt , just shut up.
Where Legato thinks men are getting the short end of the stick is when it comes to medical treatment, which is part of the reason she dedicated herself to founding Columbia's groundbreaking gender-specific medical organization.

Time Management
11.02.06 (6:00 am)   [edit]
We tend to rush and save time when we are driving from office to home only to watch a television show of one complete hour, and then we sit in front of our television set whereas our other important things are still pending. We tend to be in emergency while we are describing an assignment to our subordinate and at the same time if a friend calls from a distant place we may waste half an hour on telephone and ask our subordinate to come again at a later time. It does not mean that one should not watch television or not talk to friends on phone but we must try and create a balance to save and manage our time. It is the most precious asset of our life. Though we all know its importance but many among us hardly realize its value.

Saving Time
Time management is a skill, which we can learn only by practicing. But first we must learn to save our time. Here are some useful tips to save time: -
a. To ensure effective use of time make a list and know where do you tend to waste your time. A common man’s/woman's list may include: -
(1) Sleeping at night - 8 hours
(2) Talking with friends on phone - ½ hour
(3) Chatting with colleagues - ½ hour
(4) Tea/refreshment etc at office - ½ hour
(5) Meals - 1 hour
(6) Sleeping after lunch - 1 to 2 hours (May not be applicable in few cases)
(7) Television - 2 hours
(8) Some other unnecessary wastage of time at home/office - 1 hour
(9) Using PC other than office - 1 hour
b. In these sixteen hours, 6 ½ hours to 7 hours are unavoidable which we require for sleep. Cases may differ person to person but so far we have wasted almost 16 hours out of our 24 allocated hours of a day. What do you expect to do in these 8 possible hours in office and at home? Can you give a productive time to your work or spent a quality time with your family during only these 8 available hours?
c. Now when you have prepared your own list, you must review it and see what is justified and what is not. You may give it to a friend to review it critically and tell you from where to save the time. For example from the above-mentioned list you can save: -
(1) 1 hour - From television
(2) 1 to 2 hours - From afternoon nap
(3) 1 hour - Unnecessary wastage of time at home/office
(4) 1 hour - By waking up early and restricting your sleep to 6 ½ to 7 hours
(5) 1 hour - From unnecessary chatting with friends,tea/refreshments and telephone
(6) ½ hour - From meals
(7) 1 hour - From unproductive time on PC
d. You have just saved precious 6 ½ hours, you may be able to save some more time if you view your own list more critically and have a will to save time.
e. There are many other time wasters in our life, try to avoid them. Some of the time wasters can be: -
(1) Unnecessary traveling
(2) Chatting on the Internet
(3) Long discussions in the office or at home
(4) Political/religious discussions, which serve no purpose
(5) Unnecessary meetings
(6) Unnecessary callers
(7) Sitting in other's office without any justified reason
(8) Those unfinished tasks which keep bothering your mind
f. Saving minutes will ultimately save hours and you can utilize these hours for a substantial work
g. Follow the famous saying, “don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today”
h. Learn fast and effective reading
i. Make a timetable for yourself and follow it
j. Telephone, television and PCs are user friendly and are suppose to facilitate you. Do not let these things waste your time

Managing Time
a. Restrict office works to your office and do not carry it to your home. Manage your time at the office and finish your office work within the prescribed time
b. Try to handle a letter, report or file once only when it comes to you for the very first time
c. Do the important task or assignment first, let it not bother you all the time
d. Write down all the things you need to do in a days work and make a plan to deal with them
e. Spare some time for emergencies while making your plan
f. Do one thing at a time, do not try to handle several problems simultaneously
g. Organize your work
h. Delegate responsibilities for various tasks to appropriate subordinates. You do not need to do a job, which your subordinate can or should do
j. While giving a task to your subordinate be brief and to the point. Make him understand his assignment once for all. He should not disturb you time and again for the same thing
k. Build the power of decision-making. If it is to be made by a superior officer, get it done immediately and then take action
l. Prioritize your work
m. Things you personally don’t like should be done first so that they do not irritate you while doing other work
n. Make a target for a particular job in hand or any other thing you do. And finish it within the target time. For example if you want to reed a book of 500 pages you may target 50 pages a day and finish within 10 days

Uses of Saved Time
a. Utilize this time to plan for the training of your subordinates
b. Do some creative work/activity
c. Spend quality time with your family
d. Enhance your knowledge by reading books and newspapers
e. Learn some skill
f. Utilize this times to think about the welfare of your subordinates
g. Think of eradicating ills from the institution you are serving in
h. Improve your health
i. Work towards the greater aim of your life
j. Do some future planning for yourself and your family

In the fast advancing world we are racing for the best. We can progress and lead the race when we exactly know to utilize our time at its best. Time is money, an endeavor should be made to save it, manage it and spend it for a useful purpose. There are no prescribed rules for saving and managing time. Being flexible you can draw your own priorities and ultimately you will add something better to your own life. The beauty of life lies in organizing it. Use your time, “enjoy life it’s not a rehearsal”.
